Bingo Terminology

Bingo has its own jargon just like other hobbies and games. Sometimes the language can get pretty technical. Here are some of the terms to know:

Admission Packet: In some games players must purchase a minimum number of cards in lieu of an admission fee. This is called an admission packet and the number of cards usually ranges from three to six. Sometimes, special games are included as well.

Blackout/Coverall: When a blackout or coverall game is played, players must cover the entire card in order to win.

Booklet: A booklet contains a certain number of bingo sheets. Each sheet has the same number of cards on it and they can all be played in one bingo session. The booklets are bound so that players can tear off cards as they use them.

Consolation Prize: In some games, if there is no winner within a certain number of calls a consolation prize is offered.

Face: A face is an individual bingo sheet. Usually a face contains 24 numbers with a free space in the middle although this can vary. A booklet is made up of several faces.

Hard-way Bingo: In hard-way bingo players must make a straight line without using the free space in order to win.

Money Ball: Before some bingo games a money ball is drawn. If a player hits bingo on that number, his or her winnings will double.

ON: ON is the way players describe the number of faces that are on a sheet. For example, 8 ON means that there are eight faces on the sheet.

UP: UP is the number of sheets that make up a booklet. For example, 7 UP means that there are seven sheets in the booklet.

Speed Bingo: Speed bingo is a special, quicker form of bingo that is played before or after a game. In this game, numbers are called quickly and players can win for matching as few as three numbers.

Split Pot: When a bingo game has a split pot policy it means that the winner and the house split the sales for the session. For example, the winner may get half the pot and the house may keep half.
